James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad, says that he doesn't think he's seen anyone on the internet correctly guess who Idris Elba is playing.
James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad, has said that he doesn't think he's seen anyone on the internet correctly guess who Idris Elba is playing in the movie. Gunn and the cast of The Suicide Squad, including Elba, will take part in a special panel on the film at DC FanDome tomorrow, where the first trailer for the movie is expected to be released, as well as confirming who the new cast members will play.
The Suicide Squad is a follow-up to the 2016 movie directed by David Ayer. That movie was panned by critics, despite doing good business at the box office. As a result, a planned direct sequel was scrapped and Ayer left the project, to be replaced by Gunn, who wrote an entirely new script. Elba was hired, initially to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, but that was later changed to a new character who has yet to be named. There has been much speculation over who Elba will play, with many speculating that a recent video wishing Gunn a happy birthday hinted that he'd be playing Bronze Tiger. However, according to Gunn, that isn't correct.
Gunn was responding to a tweet from Elba, in which the actor says that he's looking forward to DC FanDome, and that he might even tell audiences who he's playing, jokingly referring to the fact that the characters will be announced during the panel. Gunn replies that the funniest part of it all is that despite rampant speculation, no one on the internet has managed to correctly guess which character Elba will be playing. You can see the tweets below.
Here's the craziest part. I don't think I've seen a single person online EVER guess who you're playing.

Of course, Gunn might be saying that to throw people off the scent, while at the same time building anticipation for tomorrow's panel, but he may well be telling the truth. Either way, it makes tomorrow's The Suicide Squad panel an even more enticing prospect, given that there might be a genuine surprise announcement when it comes to Elba's character. What is just as illuminating is that Gunn doesn't mention any other characters, meaning that speculation that John Cena is playing Peacemaker is more likely to be true.
Of course, it's not just Elba and Cena whose characters will be revealed tomorrow. Gunn hired a host of new actors to star in The Suicide Squad alongside returning characters like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, and Jai Courtney's Boomerang. The new cast also includes David Dastmalchian, Storm Reid, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Alice Braga, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, and Taika Waititi.
And while some of their characters are confirmed, such as Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, most of their roles are still a secret. So, with both a trailer debuting and a host of new characters set to be confirmed, The Suicide Squad panel at tomorrow's DC FanDome event is shaping up to be a must-watch event.
