Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the galaxy of titles linked to the Agnelli family, suddenly leaves the scene for health reasons. These reasons, although not better specified, seem very serious enough to make the news of his death now close (according to rumors Dr. Marchionne would be in an irreversible coma). Both FCA and Ferrari have therefore presented their new CEOs.
The market reacts by punishing the two securities in question, which are respectively down by 3% and 5%. Marchionne, who started working in the then Fiat 14 years ago, after the death of Umberto Agnelli, is considered one of the most capable managers in the world, so as to have quintupled the shareholder value during his management. We recall, as strategic choices that turned out to be winning, the merger with Chrysler and the quotation of Ferrari, which has come to have a market capitalization even higher than the FCA itself.
The property, through the board of directors, decided to choose the path of continuity, appointing FCA CEO Michael Manley and Ferrari Louis Camilleri, both are already orbiting personalities in the Agnelli galaxy. In fact, Manley is number one of the Jeep brand, a real hen with golden eggs for the entire FCA as its products have very high margins. The choice could have a symbolic meaning and allude to the possibility that the focus for the entire group can move towards a premium band, able, therefore, to generate more profits.
Camilleri, on the other hand, comes from the Ferrari board, but also has a long experience in leading companies such as Philip Morris and Kraft Foods. For Ferrari as for FCA, the challenge will be to be able to renew itself and to keep pace with other world groups in technology, especially in the field of integration of "Artificial Intelligence" and electric propulsion services. Unfortunately, both in the first and in the second sector the current offer of the two companies seems not to be in step with the fierce competition, Tesla in particular. The next few months will therefore be crucial to judge the strategic choices of the new management and it is foreseeable that there will be a lot of volatility on these stocks.
